NPOCP by US standards, because there's no market for them here.
Paintwork fucked and hasn't run in years: £1000 (~$1500)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Apparently decent condition: £1300 (~$2k)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Apparently they made a RHD Cadillac Seville. Who knew? Howmanyleft.co.uk says they sold 360-ish here in total, and 180ish are left.

I'm guessing they had the same 4.6 V8 over there too? 250-300 HP on the FRONT WHEELS. imagine that.

Sounds like it from Wikipedia. I'm almost tempted by the second one.

This is one of the few times where it looks like UK prices on used cars aren't significantly cheaper than in the US - that Eldorado would probably just be scrap value here. Although I'd bet a buy here/pay here used car lot would probably price the Seville in the $4000+ range. Personally, though, I wouldn't touch an old Northstar Cadillac with a barge pole.

Well, take the advertised prices with a pinch of salt - they're worth what someone will pay for them, and there's no market here to establish values. That first one looks very optimistic for a non-runner.
The second one looks alright though, at least on paper. What's wrong with those?

Oil leaks, oil burning, and head gasket failures. And that was while they were still pretty new. In typical GM fashion, it was a reasonably sound concept released onto the market half-baked and the later ones did get better, but its still not a paragon of durability or longevity, which is what American V8s are supposed to be.

Oh, right, yes. The engine was the one bit I figured there was no need to worry about...

I'd probably avoid the Eldorado for that price even though it shouldn't be hard to get it much closer to 500. However, you can easily get a SC400/Soarer V8 or E38 for that money so if you don't want this particular model I'd probably not recommend it. The Seville doesn't seem to be such a bad choice though, of course you always have to expect the typical N* issues showing up at one point. I paid 2300gbp for my Mark VIII I bought near Sheffield, considering the money I had to dump into so far it might have not been the best deal, on the other side its the only 1st gen LSC in Europe I am aware of and I wanted exactly this car so I was happy to find one in any condition and I don't really care what I have to invest to keep it on the road.

do it!

Yeah, someone else said about the N* issues. I hadn't heard of them before for obvious reasons. I think I'd sort of half consider the Eldorado if it was running and half the price, because who cares about paintwork at that price?
The Seville suddenly lost all its attraction when I was told that the engine isn't rock-solid - I'd assumed that was the one thing you could trust about it. Otherwise, it's quite an interesting alternative to other stuff around at about £1k. Obviously there are lots of objectively better cars, but again, at that price who gives two hoots?

I think this one might be an ebay moment too far. After the kei pickup debacle, I have to learn to hold fire. I haven't even looked at insurance quotes yet.
But I know what I'm going to do now, and hopefully that'll nail the coffin closed.

Just checked insurance quotes. No-one will quote on it except the 'we cover any driver' people. Cheapest quote was £2k, most expensive £24k. Oh well...

Here's Clarkson reviewing one in 1998. His verdict was that it's a brilliant engine inside of a very large potato.

A friend of mine is currently selling a 1990 (2nd gen) Lincoln Towncar near Suffolk, it is 2 grand but that's still a great price for a great car in good condition. Here's what RCR had to say about it:

Also 24k£ lol. The most expensive quote I got for my 4.6L Mark VIII was 18k£ if I remember correctly, welcome to Britain. I'll register it in Germany and it'll most likely be under 1k.

Well, I'm pretty sure that if I contacted a broker to phone round the specialists, I'd get a more reasonable quote. Just not a good one, because there won't be any of the really cheap insurers.
The £24k and so are just silly, from companies that don't actually want the business but will 'quote' anyway. Only about half a dozen quotes in total, out of the 150ish insurers on Confused.com.

I like the idea of TCs - never been in one - but I wouldn't want to drive something that big and LHD in this country. Plus, I suspect it's wider than the driveway for my block of flats.

Sounds about right, except that the Americans tell me it wasn't a very good engine either :)

It was inherently a good engine but it was let down by lackluster build quality. Later versions fixed many of the issues.
It's also one of the few engines to have a plastic cover that's not terrible, so it's got that going for it.
